What is it with FireFox?
2/23/2005 12:01:16 PM

I don't like FireFox. I'm not afraid to divulge the fact that I don't like it. I don't like people who insist on running on about how great it is, or people who try to push it in my face. I can't ignore it though, and this is why:

I don't like FireFox. I'm not afraid to divulge the fact that I don't like it. I don't like people who insist on running on about how great it is, or people who try to push it in my face. I can't ignore it though, and this is why:

Whilst looking over the FireFox website I noticed the increasing number of downloads it is garnering, this inspired me to try and work out why people are so keen on this browser over its Microsoft Counterpart. So why do so many people choose to switch to FireFox?

The Hype?
FireFox has garnered more and more media hype as the downloads increase, and the more it gets hyped, the more people download it. It's a never-ending circle of over hyped confusion, and one of the many reasons people have chosen to download the browser.

The Cross-Compatibility Issues?
I'm not a fan of FireFox but even I own a copy on both my home and work machines. Cross Browser compatibility on websites is a must to for every website, you cannot afford to lose out on visitors/potential customers because your website doesn't work in other browsers. Remember, FireFox now have almost 20% of the browser market share - that's 20 out of every 100 visitors you will be potentially losing if your website is not cross browser referenced!

The Tabbed Browsers?
Though you wouldn't think this would be a top competitor in this field, it is. A lot of people I asked said they decided to go with Mozilla and FireFox browsers because of the tabbed browser bar. This enables you to open more than one Internet page within the same browser window, in turn, saving on computer usage and virtual memory capacity. Internet Explorer opens a new window as opposed to this, and in turn, uses up a lot of the computers memory, which can lead to unresponsiveness and crashing.

The Security Issues?
Nearly everyone I spoke to said one thing, "It's secure." And I'm not going to deny it, but is Internet Explorer really that unsecured that people feel they have to switch - well, in reality - no. The reason for this is that so many people have hacked and hunted down flaws in Internet Explorer, that Microsoft has been forced to fix them, and made them more secure. Yes, there are still holes in Internet Explorer, but FireFox has not been on the market long enough, or holds enough of a market share for hackers to try and discover all the holes in it. And already, a few companies have in fact, found vital flaws in FireFox (which have now been fixed).

Open Source Project and Patches?
There are currently hundreds, possibly thousands of FireFox patches and upgrades for download across the Internet. Adding to the bare-bone structure of the original FireFox, these patches allow more usability and customisation of the FireFox browser - but with patches not being "officially endorsed" by the Mozilla Foundation, these patches could cause the browsers security issues to be exposed - all it would take is one malicious patch. Being Open Source Software means the browsers coding is commercially available to anybody who wishes to use it - The upside to this is that FireFox can ease the strain a bit by letting people continue to work with the code and create patches, cover up security holes and customise the browser to how they feel it should be, without the encouragement of the Mozilla Foundation.

Feedback and Production?
One thing that is prominent in FireFox is its "fan base", a dedicated following of users who promote to the death and spread the word about FireFox. One thing that people like about FireFox is how much the designers appreciate and encourage feedback and ideas on the project. This is a browser that they want people to use, and the way they do it is by letting people tell them what they want. What more can they do?

And after all that, no, I am still not convinced that FireFox is a good enough browser for me to make a switch. I can understand the hype behind it, but I'm sure it will soon die down. There are plenty of flaws and design features which are snarled at in FireFox, and as a web developer and website builder, it is not easy to get around them using the new methods of building on the market (CSS based browsing, for example). FireFox is, in its own right, a good browser, and once they have smoothed out their compatibility and usability issues, then maybe I will think about a switch again.

Comments: MS is going to implement several Firefox features in IE7, including tabbed browsing. Hmm.

Comments: Simple example: CSS style="width:222px" on a simple DIV... Firefox rendered it at 254 pixels wide and IE was the only one that knew what to do. So shut up about the CSS crap. They both have their pros and cons.

Comments: I use Firefox all the time now for designing websites.

Facts are IE can help you get Spyware.

IE installs seacrh bars without your knowledge.

IE can even damage your OS permanently.

So if this is not enough for people to migrate to Firefox I dont know what is.

I have been using Firefox for 5 months and I have got 0 spyware and 0 search bars.

Tabbed browsing is cool and I am now able to work more effeciently.

Firefox add ons are great and they work and dont intrude on the browser.

Comments: Let's face it, IE and Windows (any flavor) are stuck in an obsolete OLE world. Object Linking and Embedding was developed by Xerox and handed to Microsoft long ago and not much about the windows foundation has changed since. I prefer software that supports open standards and whenever possible open source code. There are many reasons for my preferences in software, but the biggest reason is FREEDOM, as in Liberty. Microsoft lost me as a customer when it became painfully obvious that they did not want their customers to have freedom to make their own choices.

I use Mozilla  and Firefox on Linspire desktop Linux and on Mac O/SX (Linux too) and I use OpenOffice.org as my office suite. Now I am free from having to do what MS tells me to do, viruses are a thing of the past and I make my own decisions about what software I should operate or write and how I do it. For me, computing is fun again!

Comments: I agree this is just Pete's personal opinion about Firefox, and it absolutley does not show the reality as it it. With the recent security holes discovered in Firefox, a lot of people got scared, but the good thing, is that it is open source. Imagine thousands of people working to improve a piece of software, the money it would take, the time. IE doesn't have that, and although Firefox has come up with some security holes, IE is not better. Compare how many sites get hacked using IE, and how many got hacked with the latest Firefox sec hole, wich I'm more than possitive it will be fixed in a matter of days.
I switch to firefox because I don't like IE with all the almost daily security updates, plain, and simple, there must be a reason for them.

What are you on about? It's IE that has the rendering bugs. Try building a website from scratch, using proper code (see W3C) and you will notice this pretty soon.

Comments: IE is not CAPABLE of properly rendering compliant code.

What more needs to be said?
Left on 2/24/2005 8:24:11 AM by Anonymous
Comments: I'm a web developer. My websites look worse in IE than in Firefox/Opera/Safari. It's not because I don't like IE, it's because old IE simply can't handle that much (without serving hundreds of kb of javascript hacks, css workarounds and such).

It's obvious that Firefox cannot guarantee that you're 100% secure for the rest of your life, but the simple fact is that IE has been used many times to plant malware and Firefox yet hasn't. If it happens, you can always switch to another, more secure browser.
Left on 2/24/2005 8:23:27 AM by Anonymous
Comments: IE will always be insecure because Microsoft made the stupid decision to make it part of the OS. Every time there's a hole found in IE, that's a way for hackers to get directly to your OS. If Firefox or other browsers have bugs, you do not have this problem.

Comments: Even if they downloaded it because of the hype, they wouldn't continue to USE it if they didn't like it; that's why FF has "almost 20% of the browser market share" as you noted.

Tabbed browsing is even more of a reason to stay with FF than I realized; its really addictive.  By holding down control as you read a page and click links, they open in the background and so by the time you're ready to read them, they're all loaded for you.

As far as security goes, FF is less vulnerable 'out of the box' by simply not having ActiveX.  And I'm glad; I really see no reason for it.  While FF may be just as vulnerable to spoofing, I highly doubt you'll be infected with spyware from just visiting a website like you can with IE if the patches aren't fully up to date (or sometimes even if they are).

When you say "currently hundreds, possibly thousands of FireFox patches and upgrades for download" do you mean extensions?  If so, you can download them from the official site (https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox) and thus not have to worry and in any event, there is a warning before installing anything.

Also, they can GREATLY improve one's enjoyment of web surfing; consider the Adblock extension which can get rid of a LOT of annoying ads, BGM Conductor which can shut off background music or AniDisable which can stop moving GIFs.

Not to mention games like Cards or Blockfall, but those are just for fun ;)

Comments: Does the author really believe that IE6 has an even half-decent implementation of CSS?

Have s/he actually read the CSS standards?

IE fails to implement significant parts of CSS1 (1996) and huge sections of CSS2 (1998).

Almost all of the so-called 'bugs' which IE fans claim to spot in Firefox are actually correct standards-compliant behaviours.

Talk about seeing the world upside down!
