Lycos Announces ... Pamela Anderson Stacks Up Web Searches as New Number One Term This Week
4/19/2005 7:49:57 AM

Constantine Maroulis, Most-Searched American Idol The Lycos 50 for Week Ending April 16, 2005

WALTHAM, Mass., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Lycos, Inc. (http://www.lycos.com/), a leading provider of search, community and technology lifestyle destinations, today announced the following information from The Lycos 50(TM), the 50 most popular Internet search results for the week ending April 16, 2005. For a complete list of The Lycos 50(TM) and for in-depth text of The Lycos 50 Daily Report, go to http://50.lycos.com/. Readers of The Lycos 50 can also share their thoughts on Internet trends and pop culture on The Lycos 50 Blog located at http://lycos50.tripod.com/blog/.

The Lycos 50(TM) Top 10 Search Terms for the Week Ending April 16, 2005:

   1) Pamela Anderson 6) Taxes
   2) Paris Hilton 7) Dragonball
   3) Pope John Paul II 8) Poker
   4) The IRS 9) WWE
   5) Britney Spears 10) KaZaA

  Notes of Interest:

Pamela Anderson (#1) takes over the number one spot this week for the first time ever on The Lycos 50 due in part to Anderson's new FOX sitcom, Stacked. Anderson is consistently one of the most popular celebrities online, rarely falling out of the top 20, and appearing on The Lycos 50 for 294 consecutive weeks since Lycos launched its weekly list in Sept. 1999. Search activity for Anderson is two times more popular than Paris Hilton (#2) and three times more popular than searches for Pope John Paul II (#3). Although searches for the Pope have dropped during the past week, web users are still intrigued over the question of who will be the next Pope. As the 115 cardinals begin their papal election process, online interest centers on three top Pope-related searches: election of the next Pope; Pope candidates; and Pope successor.

Other Notes of Interest:

American Idol (#12) contestant Constantine Maroulis (#37) is the first current Idol from season four to make The Lycos 50, with the exception of Mario Vazquez who made the list during the week of March 22 after he abruptly quit the competition. Maroulis is twice as popular as the second-most searched Idol, Bo Bice. Search activity for Bice is up 543 percent over last week, but still not strong enough to push him onto The Lycos 50. Idol contestant Vonzell Soloman is generating the least amount of online interest. In fact, American Idol contestant William Hung, who turned losing into an art of success, is more popular with web users than Solomon.

The most-searched American Idol contestants for the week ending April 16, 2005 are:

   1) Constantine Maroulis 6) Mikalah Gordon
   2) Bo Bice 7) Anwar Robinson
   3) Carrie Underwood 8) Anthony Federov
   4) Nadia Turner 9) Lindsey Cardinale
   5) Scott Savol 10) Vonzell Solomon
